901/902 MATH/SCIENCE (KRUSHEL&SCOTT)

Hello everyone!
We hope you all are feeling healthy.
This week we will be switching learning platforms away from our blog and in to D2L Brightspace.  This is where we will be doing all of our remote learning for the foreseeable future. Each week your Math & Science tasks will be posted in D2L in the order you need to complete them. These tasks can also be found in the content tab. While you are working through each task, teachers will be available at different times through Google Meet for you to ask questions.  The "nickname" for the tutorial will be posted in the announcements section 5 minutes before the tutorial starts. The one hour start times for grade 9 tutorials this week are as follows:
Math 9/Science 9 Monday (12pm, 1pm, or 2pm)
Wednesday (9am, 10am, 11am)
Please take a look at this D2L tutorial video that we have created to help you get to know D2L a bit better!

This week we will continue on with Polynomials & Environmental Chemistry.
Please email your teacher if you are having any trouble logging on to D2L or getting in to your Math shell or Science shell.

Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Math: Today we continued multiplying and dividing fractions practice. We reviewed the booklet that you were given yesterday. There will be a math check in tomorrow on Multiplying and Dividing positive and negative fractions.

Science: Today we started learning about Chemical Reactions. We reviewed the Topic 7 and 8 notes that you filled in last week. This should have already been filled in. Use the notes below in order to help fill in the booklet if you are not yet done it. Notes from the day:

Chemical Reaction: When two or more substances undergo a reorganization of atoms to form new substances

Reactants: the substances that go into a chemical reaction (they will react)
Products: the substances that come out of a chemical reaction (new substances that were not there before)

How do you know when a chemical reaction has occurred?? Think about the chemical properties we learned about in Topic 2.

  • the substances absorb or give off heat/light
  • there is a new substance formed
  • a gas is produced
  • colour change
  • odor change
Reactants --------------------------------------------------------------------------> Products

Methane + Oxygen -----------------------------------------------> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Heat

Types of chemical reactions:
Explosion

  • Nitroglycerin Explodes --------> gives off Nitrogen Carbon Dioxide, Water
  • C3H5N3O9  ----> N2  +  CO2  + H2O

Photosynthesis

  • Carbon Dioxide + Water + Light    ------->  Oxygen and Glucose (plant food)
  • 6CO2 + 6H20 + (energy) → C6H12O6 + 6O2

Corrosion

  • Iron + Oxygen -------> Iron Oxide
  •  4Fe+ 3O2 → 2Fe2O3.

Combustion
  • Propane + Oxygen ------> Carbon Dioxide and Water
  • C2H5OH + 3 O2 = 2 CO2 + 3 H2O
  • Note: you ALWAYS need Oxygen to have combustion. (Needed reactant)
  • You ALWAYS make carbon dioxide and water during combustion (always products)
Next up in science, we will be learning HOW to balance the chemical equations in chemical reactions.

Endothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction that absorbs energy.  You will know it is absorbing energy because it feels cold. (Eg. photosynthesis)

Exothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction that releases energy. You will know that is exothermic if it gets hot. (combustion or explosion)

  • There is one parent cell and two daughter cells are created
  • Genetically identical (cloning)
  • 100% DNA transferred to the off spring from the parent
  • Pattern: copy; divide (x1)
Meiosis
  • sex cell formation
  • gamete formation
  • 4 cells are created at the end
  • 50% DNA from each parent cell
  • Each gamete holds 50%
  • Chromosomal crossing over: this provides variation to the gametes
  • Slower process
  • Pattern: copy; cross over (variation); divide
3. Genetics
  • Punnent Squares: Reference practice sheets (Sponge Bob genetics, coin flipping genetics and punnent square practice sheet.
    • Be able to create a punnent square for questions such as:
      • Genotype of father is Hh (Straight hair is dominant)

Gattaca Questions:
You must complete the following question in ONE PEECC paragraph:

  1. The technology to manipulate DNA in the way portrayed in the movie GATTACA is now available.  Write a paragraph describing whether or not you think that the technology portrayed in the movie should be used the way it was in the movie.  Do you think scientists should manipulate the DNA so parents can choose their children’s traits?  Why or why not?

You must complete ONE of the following questions in ONE PEECC paragraph:

  1. Should scientists be able to choose any/all the traits or only those that may lengthen the life of a child?  Who should make this decision?
    OR
  2. Should there be laws to enforce when and how genetic engineering should be used?

** You will be handing in TWO (2) PEECC paragraphs**

Sept. 25, 2019

How to prep for your Science quiz on Thursday.

Take 10 minutes to organize your journal...ensure that there are no loose handouts
Sit with your journal open, flip through it, and look at the big picture of what we have been exploring.
Re-read your critical thinking response around We only know 13% of species on Earth...don't edit it as we need the baseline writing sample.  We are missing a few so ensure that it is shared with us.
Read through your 4 paragraph responses on adaptations & competition...read the feedback that you received on your written responses...
Check the blog and ensure that you can answer the questions we recommended going in to the weekend
Sit with the textbook (go to HDC website, click on orange brightspace, log on to Cougar Community shell, go to digital textbooks/grade 9...voila) and go through Topics 1 & 2 and add to your notes in your journal (this looks like annotating & adding notes in the margins of your journal to make your course notes richer)
Look at Topic 1 and Topic 2 Review questions in the textbook...can you answer all of them? You don't need to write it all (unless you want to) but you should be able to talk your way through them.
Look at the Wrap Up questions in the textbook and do the same process
Think about different areas in the world ie tropical vs temperature...how would your answers adapt if the setting of the question changes?
Re-watch the Crash Course ecology video a few times...don't take notes...just take it in...yes, some of the vocabulary is passed where you need to be but the theory is everything that we have covered
Ask an adult to discuss and play Devil's Advocate with you...
Think about how you will support your ideas with details & examples
Consider how you will attack the quiz ie: please don't answer in paragraph format...use bullets & score points with everything you mention
Think about using charts to organize your ideas ie: if you are asked for advantages & disadvantages

Here's a little summary of the Exponent Laws...thanks to Mr McSween for finding this :)

Today's notes:
